Sofie Laguna

Sofie first trained as an actor, graduating from the Victorian College of the Arts in 1992. Since then she has worked in television, film and theatre. She has worked for the Flying Bookworm Theatre Company and the Salamanca Theatre Company touring theatre into schools  for all age levels throughout Victoria, Tasmania and NSW.

In 2000 Sofie turned her attention to writing children's books. Sofie now has ten books for  children including picture book, chapter books and novels. Her first picture book, MY YELLOW BLANKY, published in 2002, is a warm and funny story about the  almost addictive and very sensual relationship a child can have with a  blanky. For a younger audience Sofie performs a play based on the story of MY YELLOW BLANKY with the audience participating in the show.

Sofie's second picture book, TOO LOUD LILY, which won Honour Book in the 2003 CBCA awards, is about a hippo who discovers a flair for performance. This story also lends itself well to audience participation and Sofie uses it as a tool in her sessions for children.

As part of the 'Solo' series of easy-to-read for beginners,  Sofie's BILL'S BEST DAY has been very well received, along with BAD BUSTER, an Aussie Nibble,  and BIG NED'S BUSHWALK, a Lothian Start-up.

For upper primary students Sofie talk about how her career has developed and the inspiration for her work. She then gives the students an opportunity to act out a scene from one of her novels, SURVIVING AUNT MARSHA, with Sofie in the director's seat. She has found this is a great way to encourage children to connect with a text and to bring a story to life. It's also lots of fun.

Sofie's most recent novel for young people, BIRD AND SUGAR BOY, won Honour Book in the Children's Book Council Book of the Year Awards.

Sofie also writes for adults and recently the ABC broadcast her first  radio play on Radio National. Sofie herself played Sue, one of the  main characters in the play. Sofie's first novel for adults, One Foot Wrong, has recently been published by Allen and Unwin. She has just completed the screenplay due to go into pre-production January 2009
