Mary Anastasiou - Editor Assessments

A self-confessed chocoholic, pluviophile and lover of all things Halloween, Mary Anastasiou has been described as the ‘Swiss Army Knife’ of Australian KidLit.

With a 30-year background in marketing and design, Mary’s roles in publishing have included Creative Director for indie publishers, Larrikin House and Managing Editor / Marketing Manager for Five Mile Books.

Author or the much loved 'I want to be...' series, Mary writes books that she hopes will engage, inspire, and empower little people on their journey to becoming big people. Her most recent titles include Jimmy Bottoms, The Art of Making Friends, Julius Squeezer, Tilly’s New Broom and 123 A Jolly Christmas Countdown. With more titles set for release Ellie Phant (Totally Fabulous) Zoomies, Disco Duck, and Angus McGrew and the Unicorn Crew Mary is set to continue making her own kid lit dreams come true.

Responsible for the design and creation of more than 300 children’s titles over 5 years, Mary has worked exclusively with authors and illustrators to create books that (she hopes) will one day become classics. Mary now offers assessments, Personal Branding & Marketing Matters Workshops as well as one-on-one mentoring sessions to aspiring creatives (authors and illustrators) hoping to achieve their publishing dreams.

Mary is interested in quirky, silly or a little out of the ordinary. Manuscripts with strong characters and compelling narratives. Stories that engage, inspire or empower. Work that nurtures a genuine love for storytelling and reading.

With illustrator portfolios, she's looking for a strong understanding of expression (specifically facial expression). Can you capture emotions convincingly? Open to all illustrative mediums including refined digital.

Mary is not looking for anything with an obvious moral or shove-it-down-your-throat 'message'. These are only ok if the message is subtle. She is also not looking for illustrators who can't provide clear examples of character development or varied facial expressions and physical (body) postures.
